Yes, I didn't realise the aim was to keep it plug & play.
He originally had a capacitor across the zener, as discussed on (I think)
the milsurplus forum (it seems to have wound up here on the arc5 forum).

I thought the capacitor might result in the well-known relaxation oscillator
mode, where a zener (or voltage regulator) cycles between trigger and
marked operating voltages.
He removed the cap, but I think in its current state, excursions in the plate
voltage on strong signals might cause the zener to drop out, resulting in
distortion.
