Just for fun, since tube guys are accustomed to playing with high voltage, look up T.E.A. Laser. Many of you have what you need to build one.

I remember a Popular Electronics article years ago on how to make your own laser comms using gas tube lasers and small telescopes along with mod/demod that you had to build.

Leslie,

NASA might need their expertise:

From:
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/technology/features/laser-comm.html

"NASA to Demonstrate Communications Via Laser Beam

… It currently takes 90 minutes to transmit high-resolution images from Mars, but NASA would like to dramatically reduce that time to just minutes. A new optical communications system that NASA plans to demonstrate in 2016 will lead the way and even allow the streaming of high-definition video from distances beyond the Moon. … "

Searching with Google for: "Navy Laser Communication” reveals that there’s interest among naval communicators in laser technology. Qubits in the ocean anyone? (What is a qubit, anyway?)

Speaking of milliHertz - es, I wonder what frequencies are involved when an undersea earthquake happens and sends detectable waves through and around the globe of the earth.
