[ARC5] Light Beam Communications

Nick,
Yes! That was our motto when I worked with a laser interferometer investigating microwave frequency surface waves in Film Bulk Acoustic Resonators back when I worked for HP/Agilent. These devices now make up the duplexers in just about every cell phone out there, now manufactured by Avago, the semiconductor spin-off of Agilent.
If you wore the special filter eyeglasses it was impossible to adjust all the gadgets on the table for max signal to noise. We used small black hand held squares to find the beam and adjust as required..( My scientist/mentor would constantly fiddle all the adjustable widgets and then call me in to "fix it". We had a "map" of the light table with all the optimum settings noted and I just put them all back to spec and we were back in business.)
The light table boasted a 300 watt green laser operated at 300 milli watts. (for linearity). Our setup was s/n 2. (S/n 1 is at the Idaho National Lab and the guys that came out to train me couldn't tell me what they used theirs for except one project was to visualize/record the surface of metals as they crystalized when cooled from a molten state). Weird Science at Work!
Jay
