Well, in my opinion, receivers with the 85 kHz IF don't need a crystal filter
anyway.
The 6 - 9.1 MHz receivers most certainly do need considerable "help" in the
selectivity department, if we would like to use them for CW operations on a
ham band.
The 3 - 6 MHz receivers could use such help sometimes, but those are
certainly usable most of the time when used as-is. At least I've been able to
use them for casual work.
But, again IMHO, those receivers with even lower IFs don't really need it at
all.
