The original S-27s were indeed used in British aircraft during the "Battle
of the Beams" to locate German Knickebein and later bombing beams. Though
labeled "Ultra High Frequency", the S-27
and later S-36 were what we call VHF these days.
The S-27C is the precursor to the S-37 with only minor differences (knobs,
for example). It is indeed a UHF receiver covering from VHF up to 220 MHz.
IIRC, some German aircraft radars used this
area of spectrum.
There are some very interesting accounts of how Great Britain obtained
these receivers along with HROs, SX-28s and others prior to Lend-Lease. As
simple as any citizen returning home from the
US first visiting the embassy for funds then purchasing one from the local
radio store on their way out.
BTW, I think the US Navy used the S-27C as the RBX-1. The original
S-27/S-36 models were the better-known RBK series.
