I'm even more amazed by the incredible long range capabilities.  Inside a huge alien spacecraft with multiple heavy doors - and the little FRS style handy talkies work fine.  Mulder's in an buried railroad refrigerator car in the middle of the vast unpopulated New Mexico desert and his cellphone works just fine to call up Scully.  Well, at least in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow the guy in the P-40B was using CW.
