Wayne, although I haven't seen that particular radio before, I'm sure 
you will find that like all other military and commercial radios of that 
type, the AM mode will be "AME" or AM Equivalent, i.e. USB with some 
level of carrier.   They called it "equivalent" because it could be 
demodulated with an AM detector.   Good luck getting it running - drop 
me a direct email if you're looking for an alternative to crystals.
