You know, one of the reasons I like these lists so much 
is that so many people are smarter than me.

Of course you're right, but...
I took a moment to go out and look.  Sure enough,
I had the scope on 1 Volt per division when I 
thought I had it on 5.   Should have known better.

I did try the "cathode to cathode" type of limiter/
clipper.  It doesn't work.  Not a bit.  I can't 
explain, just report.  Signal diodes parallel and anti-
connected die a sudden and tragic death.
Power diodes (1N4004) work but they introduce
more distortion on audio peaks at high volume levels
than the zeners do.  Faster diodes?  I dunno.
Again: I just report.
The zeners connected as I reported do work
and work well.  I'm happy with them.
