I have had good success with BC-474 and BC-230
WWII rigs doubling in the PA to reach 40 and 30 meters.
The 474 required no modifications beyond bumping
the receiver LO up a little to cover 40 CW- PA doubled
without any "tweeks" in the TX.  I had a
previously modified 5-6 MC coil for the BC-230.
I left the Osc coil intact and rewound the PA coil.
Worked great and I made many contacts with it.

I've often thought about fiddling with or disconnecting
the PA padder cap in an ARC-5 transmitter to
see if I can get it to double to 30 or 20.
One of these days, if The Lord let's me hand around.
