The other quote falsely attributed to Yamamoto is the boast that once he defeated the U.S., he looked forward to dictating peace terms at the White House. That was a product of the Japanese propaganda mill.

It was thought up for the movie "Tora Tora Tora."  They wanted a ending for American audiences that was not such a downer.This was revealed on a TV documentary about the film several years ago.  In their own defense the filmwriters said, "Well, Yamamoto should have said that!" However, a recent TV show that assembled 7-8 Dec 1941 actual broadcast news reports showed that it was not entirely original for the scriptwriters.  After the attack a US newsman in his weekly radio commentary said, "You know, you might get in a lick or two at a giant when he's sleeping, but when he wakes up you better watch out."
