Well, both nations went to war with a much larger, fully industrialized
country--the USA. We could clearly outlast them, and they were both in
pretty bad internal shape when the war ended, while the USA did not have
food shortages and such.
Hubhis, that.

The Japanese believed, and with some evidence, that
the Western Powers had no stomach or spine for
a protracted war, so they risked it all on a
"gambler's throw." They were wrong.
They should have waited 70 more years.
They'd have gotten much better odds.

I have an article on this topic in the current edition of "World War II" magazine.
Yamamoto knew that Japan could not stand toe to toe with the U.S. in a prolonged war, so he planned for a first-round knockout. First, he would destroy the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. Next, he would draw whatever was left of the fleet into open seas and destroy it. Without a fleet, he reasoned, the U.S. would have no choice but to sue for peace. If the Navy hadn't cracked the JN-25 code, his plan might have worked. Yamamoto was one of the few Japanese leaders (maybe the only one) who knew that the U.S. had the stomach for a long war and would fight to the finish.?

Joe,
Was it Yamamoto who said, "We have awakened the sleeping dragon."?
(or some such thing.)

It sure sounds like him. He had studied in the U.S., traveled widely in the U.S., and had served as naval attache in Washington. He knew the U.S. and its industrial capabilities very well. Ironically, he had opposed war with the U.S.?
