Now that is interesting: at work, when this Variac would trip the breaker, the main panel was 
only about 10 feet from my bench.

Here at home, my shack/shop is set up about like yours: #10s to the shack/shop from our 
200 amp panel which is less than 20 feet away, and spec.grade outlets.

I wonder.... ???????
