My father, a linguist who spoke Japanese, was in the Dutch Army but assigned to the US forces after Holland fell to Hitler.
He ended up in Brisbane apparently decoding Japanese traffic culled from the airwaves by McArthur's own intelligence network in the Orient.
Supposedly Mcarthur was kept out of the loop on decrypted traffic by the big wigs in Washington, so he built his own monitoring network .
As a kid we lived in both Brisbane and Melbourne while my father worked. There was even a period when we all went to DC so my father could teach(?) at Naval Intelligence HQ (located in temporary buildings on the National Mall near the Smithsonian).

Yes, after Truman fired him in 1950, he considered a run for the presidency in 1952. Ultimately, the Republican Party chose another general, some guy by the name of Eisenhower.
MacArthur is a fascinating character. His supporters say he was the greatest soldier and statesman this country has ever produced. His detractors call him a poor general and the most dangerous man in American history. The wild thing is that each side has more than enough evidence to support it position because at various times, he was both.

And, as I recall, MacArthur was considered a possible contender for the
