My high school Physics teacher was a USN officer in command of an 800 ton seaplane tender that was passing through the Panama Canal on 7 Dec 1941. He had just stepped off the ship to buy a package of cigarettes when his radioman ran out on deck, yelling for him. He ran back to the ship without paying for the smokes.

The radio message said something like "Implement General Order No. 14." He opened the safe and unsealed the envelope that had Gen Order 14 in it. The General Order stated: "You are to assume that the entire US Navy has been destroyed, with the exception of your ship. Proceed accordingly."

They sailed into Pearl Harbor a few days after the attack, guns manned a ready. If they had to fight their way in to save Hawaii they would have, all 800 tons of her

Remember Pearl Harbor!
