The young experimenters I know are into software projects, not hardware these days.

I don't blame them. Hardware modules are cheap today and it isn't easy working with surface mount devices.

At least they are experimenting and not passively playing games.

It's amazing how project oriented people were back then.Now, in contrast, it's mostly passive participation. 
I think only one electronics mag still exists.
