I have a Aug 1935 issue of Popular mechanics on my desk at the moment because it contains a schematic for a radio i am currently restoring. This issue has 462 pages of really interesting stuff including a large proportion of DIY information.
I have not seen a modern issue of Popular mechanics ( or similar) in years that contained enough information to make purchase at the news stand price attractive.

And at a somewhat higher level there was the old Electronics magazine,
not so much construction articles as articles about practical applications
of electronic stuff in the industry. I can remember when that magazine
was hundreds of pages per issue. But, sadly, it was turned into more of
a non-technical, business news magazine and ultimately passed away.
Although it was no doubt given a push by the free, controlled circulation
magazines aimed at working engineers.
