Mike,
The unpainted BC-456-E is, at least in my experience over half a century,
the most common surviving version of the SCR-274-N modulator. That being
said, all the way up through the final revision of the Operating and
Maintenance Manuals in 1956, the only mention that I can find of BC-456-E are in the
caption in the photo of the system components, in the list of equipment
required, and one or two places in the text where it merely says that BC-456-E
can also be used in place of -A or -B. No explanation of the difference, if
any, between the -B and the -E. I have always assumed that the only
difference was that the -E isn't painted.
If you can find it, please post the Item Number of the BC-454-E. I'd like
to save the photo if it is still accessible.
