>From the Profile Publication on the PBY:  Patrol Wing 10 (VP-101 and VP-102) had 28 PBY-4 aircraft during the period 1940 to 1942 in the PI.  All but two of their aircraft were lost during that period.

So Patrol Wing 10 had just about the latest airplanes available, the later PBY-5A deliveries not starting until Dec 1941, by which time it was pretty much too late to get them to the PI.

I recall reading that the USN had 80 PBY's on Midway at the time of the battle there in June 1942.
