Back in the day, (1950s) when I got my pilot's license, VORs
("Omni") were in their infancy. I flew mostly on the four-course radio
ranges. They could be very challenging to follow, especially when the
departing leg was not a straight follow on to the arriving leg. After
flying over the cone of silence, how certain could you be that you were
outbound on the correct leg? There was a procedure for flying a pattern
to determine which leg you were on, but it was confusing, too, to a new
pilot. I recall getting lost once on top of a low cloud layer. (yes, I
should not have been on top as a non instrument rated pilot but the
forecast was for CAVU at my destination.) Since I was unsure of just
where I was, I found a hole in the cloud layer, spotted a small airfield
and landed. In an hour or so the layer moved on, everything was clear,
so I took off and flew with more confidence to my destination.
