If you happen to have a decent front panel for your tx they are fairly easy to remove and
replace. Was doing the as you a couple of years back when I got a hold of about 10 BC/ARC-5
tx's. Some where '696 and 459 but badly hacked. Some others where non ham band units
that had been mild to no mods done to them.

Long story short removed the coils and dial from the ham band unit to rebuild the non units.
All worked out well but did have a couple that the front panel had some extra holes. Found
some better panels and found that they are just held in place by 9 or 10 rivets. Easily drilled
out or ground down from the non showing side and replaced with pop rivets.

As you probably know there are several articles in the late 40's using a 12A6 for a drive/buffer
stage and using a 12A6 as the osc tube. Mostly in CQ magazine best I remember. I suppose
if your chassis is empty wouldn't be a
big deal to add some small metal pieces to adapt the octal hole to except a 9pin socket
if you wanted to use those instead.

GL w/ur project!
