Dave,
Agree for a 50 ohm load, but AC2EU is talking about a 50 foot long piece of wire, not a 50 ohm load. Now, 50 ft. is kind of an awkward length for 40M falling between a
nominal quarter wavelength (approx. 32ft., low Z end fed) and a half wavelength (approx. 65 ft, and Hi Z end fed). Fifty pf either series or shunt connected MIGHT work out here OK but my recommendation would be to add 10-15 of wire and use the shunt (L network) configuration.
