In the circuit that Mike shows, the diodes do isolate the two relays and do
indeed speed up the dropout time over what it would be were the relays were
connected to the key in parallel directly. 73 - Mike

  A series diode will not accomplish much at all other than reduce voltage
to the coil a bit.
The shunt diode will reduce the "flyback" voltage and increase the release
time.
