Quick check in my library I find Cathode Modulation covered in some depth in the 1948 ARRL Handbook.  Screen Grid modulation with carrier control appears in
the 1954 Handbook and maybe earlier.  Far more sophisticated circuit than used in later Heath and other offerings  Excellent explanation as well.  Would highly 
recommend reading...
