     Extremely interesting.  Note that Japan has nearly four times the
percentage of population as hams as does the U.S. and is the highest of
all. The low numbers in some countries must be accounted for by
restrictions or income. I am surprised at the low percentage in Germany.
     It is sign of the times that the illustration of a ham is a YL.
Much more attractive than some old curmudgeon.
     I don't know how much difference requiring code would make but its
a discipline and is traditional.  An argument can be made that its still
useful especially during an emergency when normal communications is
disrupted.  Of course, you can signal with nothing more than a couple of
flashlights if you know the code.
