Well, Wikipedia complains there is no citation. Eighty does seem
unlikely unless a country stopped issuing licenses long ago.
I rather think the kids who these days are fascinated with computers
are the equivalent of those fascinated with radio decades ago. I think
also one must look at the degree of maturity of the technology; radio,
or perhaps more generally electronics, has reached a very high degree of
maturity, at least to the point where there is not much readily apparent
room for individual research. In the dim, distant, past it was a very
new technology and a lot of development was made by amateurs. The
discovery that short wave transmission was far superior to long wave for
communication over long distances was primarily a discovery by amateurs,
of course, rapidly exploited by the commercial interests to whom it was
of enormous importance. Also, the foundations of "silicon valley" were
almost completely the work of amateurs, many of whom were responsible
for starting early electronics companies. Silicon Valley did not begin
with the transistor but rather with pioneer wireless outfits like Dollar
Radio (later to become Globe Wireless) and Federal Radio and Telegraph,
companies dating from the middle teens.
