[ARC5] UPS Transformers

In a similar vein, I rescued a pair of 1000 VA UPS units, hooked them to
a pair of Costco Golf Cart 6V batteries, did some fancy stuff to keep
the batteries floating at about 13.8 volts, and hooked them up to run my
shack computer / TV / 120 watt surround sound entertainment system /
auxiliary LED lighting system. Total running load is on the order of
800 watts, pretty much equally split between the data side and the
entertainment side.

I did add auxiliary cooling fans for the UPS units that come on when
running from battery power. So far the longest "real-time" run has been
a 14 hour commercial power outage last winter. No failures or problems.
It did take about 18 hours to recharge the batteries after that run,
so they were probably getting pretty close to their limit.

But having the setup arranged like a great big UPS is cool, as outages
go unnoticed, just a little click from the changeover relays and
everything proceeds like nothing happened. No computer outages, no
re-boots, no loss of computer programs in progress, no cable TV or
Internet outages, no interruptions in recordings, no having to worry
about getting the computer shut down quickly, no dropped calls, no nothing.

I took the little gel Cell out and hook them directly to to let us at 12 volt batteries big suckers. The UPS keeps them floating @ 27 volts. One day I forgot and left the ARC-2 dyna motor running for 18 hours. The battery stayed up without any trouble. And the radio didn't mind either.
