I'm not fan of AC/DC sets either, but you CAN make the SX-38 safe by making the mods and using a three prong AC plug.

Yes. Trouble is the S-38 doesn't have much room, and it would take a pretty
small transformer to fit on the chassis. Of course, the S-38 draws, at most,
30 watts, which is around 300 mA at 115 VAC, so your 1 amp job would be
quite sufficient.
Wish I could find one or two of those.
I also like the idea of 1) rewiring the connections to the switch so that when it
is off, it really is off, and 2) using Rich Post's KB8TAD idea of adding an
ALCI plug and cord in place of the original 2-wire job.
I intend to add that ALCI to my S-41G. I have not yet figured out how to
install a small isolation transformer I have here, which is good for 500 mA,
though.
