Well, I dunno about that: I have always viewed the "fork" symbol as meaning 
a direct-connection to a metal chassis, or to a sort of electrical "sink", or 
common, and the conical-looking one as a connection to the earth, the 
dashed-lines representing something buried underground.

Anyway, that is the way I have always interpreted them, and have used them 
accordingly.
