It was part of the trend toward 6" and then 5.75" wide "rack mounted"
control heads rather than the old mélange of disparate surface mount
boxes used from the early 1930s to 1945, Ian. Your C-744 was the last
of the breed for the ARC-5, and connects to the receiver rack and flex
drive tuning port on the front of the receiver. More on them at
