I’m guessing here:
In order for the signals from a loop to be combined with the signal from the sense antenna, especially at the null condition which gets the accurate direction, the signal(s) need to be modulated or sort of chopped. This permits the high gain needed to manage the null signal. Like chopping a very low DC signal such as from an RF millivoltmeter probe so it can be amplified by a more stable AC amplifier.
(Now let’s see if that is anything close to right - someone else will not have to guess like I am.)
