Very interesting discussion.
I can confirm the claim of Dave , AB5S, that working with a sub 24V B+
is possible.
Due to the availability of a HP 6209B variable PS, some months ago I wanted
to find the low end of the B+ range. To my utter astonishment one of my
BC453 was able to
receive the AM transmission of a very strong commercial station at a B+
of 11V
(in words: eleven volts), although the BFO refused to oscillate at that
low voltage.
With B+ of 24V, reception of several european commercial LF stations was
possible
For the test a headphone was used and the AF level was quite low...
As a double check I took the B+ from the 12V DC filament PS.

Of course this chance find might be due to a happy coincidence (e.g.
combination
of sound tubes in that very 453. It would be interesting to check the
possibilty of very
low B+ operation with other ARC5 samples.
