When it comes to zero-beating a crystal oscillator to WWV, I've always 
listened for the rise and fall in the band-noise when within a cycle (Hz) or two 
of exact zero-beat.

Using that method, I have always managed to get within some fraction of a 
cycle (Hz).

Your method, while very interesting, and very accurate, seems much too 
unnecessarily complex for me.
