The ARB receiver is fine as designed. I use my original, as issued ARB, powered with 28 VDC quite often on 80 meters, using the control box and the tuning head. It is the companion receiver to my ATD transmitter, which is in original condition and working properly as designed after I removed the stupid ham modifications which rendered it useless. The ATD is also using the original 28 VDC input dynamotor.
The ATD is surprisingly sensitive, and stable but lacks selectivity for crowded band conditions. To improve selectivity (I operate CW a lot and AM mainly on local AM nets), I connect an external active audio filter with peaking and notching functions, or a self-contained DSP audio processor. The DSP unit which was sold by Radio Shack at one time works for me fairly well.
Is your ARB missing the dynamotor that you want to build an AC supply for it?
