Along with Ken's suggestions I'll add one more that's especially helpful
when things are bent from, for example, being dropped on a protruding
part. Gather up a few piece of scrap wood (the harder the better) and
a good-sized C clamp, then figure how to apply pressure using the clamp
to essentially reverse the process that created the dent in the first
place. It's easy to cut wood to fit where needed and to apply pressure
gently without stretching or expanding the metal, which is often an
unwanted side-effect when using a hammer. A light touch is good.
