Along with Ken's suggestions I'll add one more that's especially helpful 
when things are bent from, for example, being dropped on a protruding 
part.   Gather up a few piece of scrap wood (the harder the better) and 
a good-sized C clamp, then figure how to apply pressure using the clamp 
to essentially reverse the process that created the dent in the first 
place.   It's easy to cut wood to fit where needed and to apply pressure 
gently without stretching or expanding the metal, which is often an 
unwanted side-effect when using a hammer.   A light touch is good.
