Robert,
Your recollection is quite good!  The racks had the 51R and 51V nav 
receivers the ARN-6 (perhaps) and, as you mention, the ARC-38s and 
such.  The R4D had the racks pretty much on one side, whereas the others 
had them on both sides.  Do you remember the filler tube for the 
hydraulics coming up and out of the floor like a drain pipe?  The C-47, 
C-53, and the Navy R4D had the radio op on the right side, in a 
cubby-hole, just inside the cabin door.
