Actually it's for the Spirit of St. Louis, like the engine cowling.

But I have seen worse.  The BC-348-J that inspired my wrinkle finish adventures had been modded with an internal power supply, a meter on the front panel, additional circuitry inside, the antenna connecter moved around to the back, a power switch and another control of some kind added to the front panel, the holes for one phone plug and the antenna connector plugged with putty(!), the nameplate removed, and finally it was painted with a hideous shade of bilious metallic blue, and then overpainted with an even more nausea-inducing shade of metallic green.

I think it must have scared the children, stampeded the cows, and caused the hens to stop laying, so they finally stored it safely in the rafters of a smokehouse, based on the amount of black soot all over and inside it.  Remember that USPS commercial where they call the mailman to take away that hideous looking doll?  It probably was like that.  

Well, I got it cheap on ebay, $25.00 Buy It Now.    Now it looks quite presentable, on display in my living room.
