Hello Dave,
The problem arises when the dial and the tuning capacitor become separated,
and then you choose to assemble a 'kit' of bits drawn from all sorts of
sets. The index pin placement is just wherever the original assembler
happened to drill - it's not exactly the same place for every Rx of the same
type. In my experience, going for equal space at the two ends of dial
traverse gets you 'in to win'.

I guess I don't understand the problem with the
pin/dial thing.
Aligning the pin-index hole in the dial with the pin socket
on the capacitor is essential for a successful alignment.
You can't "by guess and by golly" this one.
This shouldn't be a problem unless one has difficulty
with his vision, and some of us do.
The hole in the dial and the pin socket-even if the pin
is broken-off in it, should be readily visible.
Clean the two surfaces. Put a touch of silicone glue
on one surface- just a dab is enough. Attach the dial
and align the pin holes. Let sit overnight.
It will stay and, if need be, come off without damage.
