I can verify that a common-or-garden JFET works very well as a 40m VFO
in a BC-459. However, no need for heroic hacks: you can use an octal tube
base to adapt the FET. I forget which FET I used, but when I did this the
result was the most stable 40m VFO I have ever come across (ignoring
DDS/PLL types).
