There is an easy way to tell whether you are flying toward or away from a DF
station.  Just make a 90 degree turn, fly a few minutes, and request a new
bearing.  Simple geometry will tell you whether you are flying toward or
away from the station.  Can't believe they didn't know this.

I a standard ADF system, the main indication of low signal is the
instability of the needle.  If the needle moves a lot that is a good sign of
low SNR.
