[ARC5] My ARC-5 40 meter station

When I wanted to put an ARC-5 transmitter on AM, I took the same
approach Charles did, lazy man's style.

Clegg made the Thor 6, a 50 watt AM transceiver that was made small and
compact by putting the power supply and modulator in a separate box. It
provides all the needed voltage including 600 volts B+ plate modulated
by a pair of 6DQ6Bs, and interfacing to the ARC-5 or other transmitters
is easily done by way of a 12 pin Jones connector. Since Clegg put a
speech amp in the desktop unit and sent high-level audio down the cable,
I included an LM-386 to provide sufficient audio with a hi-z mic input.

While it may not be easy to find a Thor lying around, I think there is
merit in the notion of building a standalone power supply and
modulator. Since plate modulation transformers aren't easy to come by
either, screen or controlled carrier modulation is an option if you
can't find one. With a bit of thought to AM/CW switching, T/R control,
etc and you can come up with a nice solution that can be used with any
number of different transmitters in the same power class. I see 35-40
watts output and 100% modulation with the minimally-modified command set
transmitter.

PS: Here's what the Thor PS/Mod looks like, if anyone wants to pursue
this, email me for some easy and reversible modifications:
