[ARC5] Need Help with Variac Diagnosis

Within the past 18 months a friend of mine has found two Variacs in the airport dumpster and gave them to me (yes, our airport has the very best trash!)  One is a 5 amp that I have all nicely installed in a cabinet. The other he just gave me is a little Powerstat rated at about 140VA. 

It had been a while since I hooked up one of the critters so I found this on the Internet:
