Anyone who'd cut their rack panels down to 18 inches WOULD be nuts!
The best "conversion" article I remember seeing is one from Jan. 1959
QST called "Getting Started with the BC-454". A power supply was built
into 3" by 12" by 17" chassis that allowed plenty of room for the future
addition of converters, etc, and after a "lite" (filament voltage)
conversion, the receiver sat on top nice as can be. Rather than the
usual front-panel mod, the author described how to bring connections for
the gain control, bfo switch, and headphone jack down to the power
supply chassis, resulting in a neat receiver that except for a tuning
knob, looked like a virtually unmodified command set. Of course the
author was Lew McCoy W1ICP, which explains a lot.
