Hello Wayne,
You can still get alodine chromate in the US? It is not available in Australia allegedly because of its hypothesised carcinogenic properties.

Another possibility that is rather more benign is Evapa-Rust, which will clean AL as well as steel.  However it will also remove paint in the process.
