[ARC5] [Milsurplus] All Good Things.....

I just spent five minutes with Google to see if having a Facebook account alone is enough to preclude a security clearance.  Yes I know not authoritative or exhaustive but here is what I found.  One of the requirements for a security clearance is to declare all regular or special contact the applicant  has with foreign nations.

Before social media meeting this requirement was pretty simple.  You simply listed your foreign contacts.
In the age of social media this is not so simple.   If you "liked" someone is that a significant foreign contact.  Well maybe it is.  What if they liked you?  Can you even tell from the user name or profile if the person is a foreign national.
There have also apparently been attempts by foreign intelligence agents to develop on line relationships with security cleared personnel with access to sensitive information.  I would be on my guard if someone with an accent was pumping me for information at the local bar, I might well be less on my guard in a social media discussion.

Of course none of this affects the our group as we are not on the whole people with active security clearances but I could see how it would be a concern if one of our group did have an active security clearance.
The earlier comment- sorry I forgot who made it- that anything posted on facebook becomes facebook intellectual property does concern me as we often have occasion to exchange schematics and photographs.
I don't know enough about possible alternative venues for our group to make anything more in the way of a useful comment.  I have a facebook account but I have not done anything on facebook in the last two or more years.

I suspect that very few new candidates for security clearances can be found if that is the case.
Mostly, old folks like myself, who are retired, are not on facebook.
Just about all employers that are involved with sensitive information request access to your facebook
information as a way of checking one's character. Although, I don't quite agree with it, but people do
stupid things on facebook.

I had a friend who went through a security clearence course for the Coast
Guard a few years back.  One of the first questions they were asked was if
they were on FaceBook.  If they were, no security clearence. Period.  End of
discussion.  Please leave the room.  That was enough for me.  And Glen is
right.  If you go onto FaceBook, they own everything you post.  I'll pass on
that one for sure.
