I'm not by any means a qualified expert on the L-birds but according to
several L5 owners I have corresponded with, at least the majority of L5's went
overseas with the RCA radios (AVT-15, 15A, 112, 112A, AVR-20, 20A AVA-120
and/or AVA-126, 126A). Those aircraft that were used for artillery spotting
were fitted in-theater with a modified SCR-609 (modification was removal of
the power cable from the CS-79 Battery Box to save weight). These could talk
to the SCR-610's that the Artillery used. I don't know for certain whether
the HF set was removed or not. Where it was mounted (wing roots mostly)
couldn't have been used to mount the BC-659. Late in the War, replacement
aircraft might have been fitted with the SCR-619 (BC-1335) which covers the
same band but no one has ever come to me looking for one for an L-bird.
