I saw the box cover report on the website of the writer, but that was 
about 20 years ago. I can't find it now, either. This was discussed on 
the rec.antiques.radio+phono usenet mail reflector. The photo of all the 
half-rusted covers was certainly convincing!

The chemist I referred to is Barry Ornitz, who was active on the 
boatanchors site. He may have simplified the WD40 situation, or it may 
have changed since then. I'm sorry for any misinformation that I included.
