If I was going to build a HF to LW converter i would think about buying a used preselector of null historical value on ebay, make use of the cabinet, rf amplifier if present and if needed and of course the preselection components and add the crystal oscillator and the mixed.
This would give good rf preselection, and band switching in an attractive enclosure at reasonable cost and effort.

Having built a preselector with one tank circuit I suggest a J-FET RF stage 
ahead of the mixer.  Lightly load the tank for best Q, you don't need the 
gain.
