If memory serves me right (which it does less and less these days), Electronics Illustrated had a big article in the '60s about converting car radios in this manner. The thesis of the article was what you said: car radios would easily outperform an AA5.

BTW, years ago, I used to do pretty much the same thing with car radios.
Since they all have an RF amp stage, decent selectivity, and decent audio
stages, I was able to sell a few of them to local BC band listeners.
They beat the AA-5 all hollow for performance.
I would build a very-well-filtered 12.6 V or 6.3 VDC power supply, build a
"pretty" cabinet with a good speaker in it, and mount the radio into the
front-panel. I also included an antenna, usually one of those "loop" jobs,
tuned for the BC band with an added capacitor, or a simple wire antenna
depending on what the buyer wanted.
I got the radios at one of the local junkyards for very little money.
In fact, it was the owner of that junkyard who first asked me to make him
such a radio, and from that I got the idea.
