Replying to Richard and Robert at the same time:
I have the latest version of Firefox, and I definitely have an
intruder 'on-site'.
The question now turns to the idea of whether my case is unique or the
problem extends to other machines.
The key observation here is that this appeared within a few hours of
getting Firefox v37.0.01 (or maybe 37.0.1)
It's simply "heads-up" to other readers in case the problem involves
more than my PC.
(example: eBay is generally virus resistant. When I log on to eBay
soon my computer is visiting other pages. Some are quite nasty.)
(ditto at www.Futurlec.com, www.JameCo.com. However, clicking on "X"
(stop loading) the attack stops.)
Thanks to all for observations etc.
