Ken,

SDR radios, if properly designed, do not have dirty outputs.

Most splatter and IM distortion is caused by improper operation or poorly designed power amplifier whether it be from an analog or digital radio.

Commercial SDR transmitters use predistortion to minimize distortion. The Hermes based SDR radios use an algorithm developed by NR0V. He won this year's Technical Innovation award for his accomplishment:

•The 2014 ARRL Technical Innovation Award went to Warren C. Pratt, NR0V, of Santa Cruz, California. He was cited for his research leading to the development of PureSignal, "an adaptive baseband pre-distortion algorithm used to improve the linearity of amplifiers and reduce intermodulation distortion products emitted by software-defined transmitters."
